For the month of June, we have been honouring Refugee Friendship Month by sharing stories of welcome and hope in the midst of the growing refugee crisis.  The UN just released numbers indicating that more than 117 million people have been forcefully displaced from their homes, up 14% from last year.  Less than 1% resettle in western nations.

GIVE – funds to the refugee fund (choose Refugee Fund)

LIVE – a life of a welcoming volunteer (fill out interest form)

“I was a stranger and you welcomed me”. These words of Jesus from Matthew 25:35 have been the theme this year. It has been truly inspirational to hear the stories from folks at Tenth who have been welcoming newcomers into their lives through friendship, acts of service and opening their hearts or homes.

You may have heard stories of a Father from Central Asia who made the dangerous and arduous journey with his daughter on foot from Brazil to Vancouver, and eventually finding friends from Tenth and a safe place to live.

Or the story of Samira, who was on her way to a homeless shelter after arriving in Canada, but was offered a home to stay in, with a family instead, changing the trajectory of her life in Vancouver. The are so many beautiful ways people from Tenth have invited strangers into their lives.

In case you were wondering, our greatest need is to hire a Refugee Support Program Manager as this ministry is run mostly by dedicated volunteers. This would be a person that better manages all the volunteer resources and builds the systems needed to grow the ministry in a sustainable and healthy way. As we have a goal of raising $40,000 this month to help continue settling refugees, and any extra income raised above that would help us hire a manager. Thank you again Tenth Church, for all the generous ways is you are helping to meet the needs of newcomers to Canada.

If you’d like to learn how to get involved, you can email, refugee support@tenth.ca and to give towards the refugee support fund you can go to tenth.ca/give then select online giving and in the drop-down menu select “Refugee Fund.”

Thank you for helping meet the needs of newcomers with friendship, housing, among other basic needs.
