Neona shares meals with the Oasis Cafe community. Meet: Neona.

When and how did you first come across Oasis Café?
The very first time I came across Oasis Café was during a sermon at Tenth UBC Pt Grey back in February 2022. One of the volunteers spoke about Oasis, what they do there, and how fulfilling and welcoming it was. Right then and there I also felt drawn to volunteer. From the fact that, just like me, she was a student who enjoys helping others, to the motivation to give to a community with God's blessing.

What are some things that you do at Oasis Café? Oasis volunteers serve in crucial roles throughout the cafe that also cooperate and tend to one another. During my time volunteering, I have assisted in setting up the cafe, preparing food, plating and serving food, and connecting with other volunteers and guests.

What keeps you coming back? The meaning and the people. I believe volunteering at Oasis is one of the most impactful and inspirational deeds I have ever participated in. It has allowed me to feel closer to God and to the vision to bring everyone together. The wonderful people I have met at Oasis are another reason I return. They all radiate geniality and kindness, and we all share the desire to help. Seeing the hard work and time they contribute is hugely motivating, and after every shift, I look forward to the next.

How have you seen God at work in your own life through the ministry of Oasis Café? I remember almost not attending the sermon the day I learned about Oasis; however, I did. If I didn't, I would not have known about the Café. Growing up in a semi-Christian household, with a Christian mother and an atheist father and brother, it was a struggle to regularly attend church. Though I always felt God with me. I have felt him guide me, for instance, to Oasis!

What do you want to say to someone who might be interested in serving at Oasis Café? I would say to give it a try and do it. It may sound corny, but you really do affect the community just by giving your time and smile. Whether you want to meet new people, contribute to a community, make an impact, feel closer to God, or all the above, you are welcome! You may think that you are just volunteering and giving your time away but on the contrary, you will come across a type of fulfilment like no other.
