Children of God is a gorgeous, powerful musical about an Oji-Cree family whose children were taken away to a residential school in Northern Ontario. The story of Rita, a mother who was never let past the school’s gate, and her kids, Tom and Julia, who never knew she came, pushes toward redemption. Children of God offers a thrilling blend of ancient traditions and contemporary realities, celebrating resilience and the power of the Indigenous cultural spirit.

In our continued efforts as a church to learn more about the residential schools that plague(d) the lives of so many, let me invite you to consider going to this musical performance with a friend, or family member. One of the most impactful parts of the evening was staying for the discussion after the performance. I encourage you to stay after and participate!

An associated study guide was created to help unpack some of the disturbing realities and to create space for dialogue about how to move forward and take steps towards reconciliation. I would welcome an opportunity to work through the guide together. If you attend the musical, feel free to drop me a note at debbie@tenth.ca—I’d love to collaborate together on ideas you might have for us as a church.
