It is often believed that doing missions work involves going overseas. Though that is one of the ways to engage in missions work, there are many ways to participate in God’s mission without going overseas. I and my husband Steve have been missionaries in West Africa for a few years, and I am increasingly aware of the need to work with the Body of Christ in my missions work overseas. When I worked in Sierra Leone with Word Made Flesh, I experienced some health challenges, which made me often feel frustrated and discouraged. But the support I received from my brothers and sisters back in Canada gave me the ability to persevere and not lose heart. For example, one of my friends emailed me to let me know that her small group was praying for me every Thursday. The prayers and encouragement I received during my challenging times in Sierra Leone were invaluable. My work in Sierra Leone is not possible without the support of those who participate in my ministry through prayers and encouragement. By praying, you are playing an equally important role in doing God’s missions work in Sierra Leone and around the world.

Recently I came across a helpful resource called 6 Ways to Reach God’s World. It explores 6 ways to participate in God’s mission:

  1. learn
  2. pray
  3. go
  4. send
  5. welcome
  6. mobilize

I encourage you to check out the 5-minute overview video which will give you an idea of different ways to engage in God’s mission. There are many ways to be involved in reaching out to God’s world, and every Christian can be part of reaching out to the world God loves and cares so much about.

May we be unified to participate in God’s missions as one Body of Christ.

“I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one.  As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:20-21).

You are welcome to join us in praying for us and some of Tenth's other missionaries on Sunday June 2 at 12 noon at Tenth Church in Kitsilano - 1805 Larch Street.  Light lunch will be provided.

May the Lord lead us all in showing us ways how we can reach God's world, by staying and by going!
