Tenth Church is a community of worship, transformation and outreach. Our ultimate desire is to know God’s love more deeply, to love Him in return, and to follow Him more fully.

DISTINCT VALUES

At Tenth Evening we believe that the following five Distinct Values help us to live into this broader calling as a church community:

Creative Worship

Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people. Psalm 149:1

We desire to worship God with authenticity, passion, and creativity. Each week, we do this as a community by singing, reading scripture, praying, hearing the Word of God preached, and gathering around the communion table. We believe that as people made in the image of God, the God who created the earth, sun, moon, and stars, we reflect His image when we are creative, and we bring Him honour when we use our creative abilities.

Rich Liturgy

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2a

We belong to a long, rich history of God’s people. Weekly, we seek to join in this living tradition by remembering and engaging with the story of God’s redemptive work in the world. Intentional song selection, Scripture readings, sermons and communion help us to enter into this story in a meaningful way. Another way we do this is by celebrating the days and seasons of the Christian calendar. These seasons take us through the story of God as He comes to save and restore the World. The major seasons of the year that we observe are - Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Naturally, this will take us through a range of human emotions as we mourn and celebrate this transformative story.

Holy Communion

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Luke 22:19

As a part of our liturgy, every Sunday we participate in communion as a way of remembering the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. At the table we also receive Jesus' presence through faith and the Holy Spirit. This holy meal reminds us that Jesus came in a physical body, offering himself to the broken people of this world. Regardless of your background, Jesus offers Himself to anyone who is willing to begin a journey with Him.

Authentic Community

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20

A local study showed that loneliness was among the greatest problems that people face in Metro Vancouver. While we experience isolation from others, we were made to live in community. Among God's first words were, "It is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18) - instead, we share our lives with one another. While we gather as a whole community on Sundays, we also want to share life during the rest of the week. For some, this involves joining a life group; for others this involves eating a meal or serving in their neighbourhoods together. This act of being in community with one another also reflects the triune nature of God: we believe that at the center of the universe is a relationship: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are invited into this relationship and into relationship with others.

Biblical Justice

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

God is just. Throughout Scripture, we see God caring for the poor, the needy, the broken and the outsider. As followers of Jesus, we too are called to bring the good news of Jesus to the world, and to care for the needs of the most vulnerable among us. In fact, we are invited to participate with Jesus in making all things right – this is Biblical justice. This is good news for all of God’s creation: people and the earth. We are told that Jesus Christ came to reconcile all things to Himself, so we join with Him in this mission even when it is costly. There are many opportunities to join in with God’s work, from our creation care team or Oasis Café to serving internationally with missions – we invite you to join in with what Jesus is doing in the world!
