Refugee Friendship Month
Every day we see the evidence of brokenness in our world. We can often feel powerless because we don’t know what to do, we don’t know how to help, or we don’t know where to begin. The forced displacement of so many people around the world (89.3 million) can seem overwhelming and in many ways it is, but it doesn’t need to stay that way. There is a way forward that leads to hope and an opportunity lies now in our own backyards. For the past 7 years, Tenth has been welcoming newcomers in Vancouver and embracing them into community. We have stood with dozens and dozens of families and singles from Iraq, Kurdistan, and most recently, Afghanistan. Our community of welcome continues to grow, and we are doing all we can do to support families and individuals fleeing unsafe conditions in their home country to seek refuge here in Canada. We’ve recognized that connection, friendship, and belonging are what bring hope to a broken world. As we welcome and connect with newly arriving refugees seeking refuge in the Lower Mainland, we build enduring relationships with strangers that not only help give newcomers roots and a sense of belonging but give the rest of us a sense of purpose and call. We can be encouraged by the words of Mother Teresa, “we cannot all do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” It all starts with a simple hello. |
