Welcoming fall with thanksgivingDear Tenth family, For many of us, the fall is a time of learning and setting new intentions for the new season or year. It is a time of re-setting habits, and re-centering our daily lives on the values and priorities that are truly the most important to us. It is a time to sweep away the the leaves of summer, and let go of everything that no longer brings us closer to the love of our Creator. As you read this newsletter, I want to encourage you to reflect on the practices you want to bring with you into this new season, and the practices you want to leave in the past, falling away like the changing autumn leaves. As for me, I am excited to adopt a more intentional practice of gratitude and meditation this fall. I truly believe that there is power in expressing thankfulness for what we have, and writing down or verbalizing the ways that we have experienced God's love and light. I pray that this gratitude empowers me to share abundance with those in my community - both locally and globally. As autumn routines pick up in pace, I pray for the shedding of rush and worry, instead allowing space for practices of spiritual formation. I encourage you to reflect as well, on the ways in which you can center gratitude and thanksgiving in your own practices of spiritual formation. Amidst the change of seasons and uncertainty so present in the world right now, the loving kindness of God is constant. This love can be revealed to us in our relationships and our communities, and expressing gratitude for this love is such a wonderful way to remind ourselves that even though life is so strange and uncertain, we are loved, and we get to share that love with others. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; Let Israel say, Psalm 118:1-2 In this newsletter, you will find many opportunities for involvement with the work of Tenth Global. We are so grateful for you and your support, without you - the Tenth Global community members - we simply would not be able to do the work that we do. Coming up this fall are some fabulous opportunities for you to engage with Tenth Global in new ways, and I am so excited to share them with you! In this newsletter you'll find invitations to film screenings and times of prayer and planning for this upcoming year of mission. I am also thrilled to share some stories from our partners in Cambodia, and from refugees in Vancouver. I hope that you are encouraged and inspired! With God, for others, Holly |
First ThingFive Prayer Items for Your Consideration The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so that we can be quietly about our business of living simply in humble contemplation. This is the way our Saviour God wants us to live. 1 Timothy 1:1-3 We welcome you to join us in prayer this week, to meditate on God's steadfast love and to take action against the injustice in the world. Justice Journey Prayer and DiscernmentSaturday, October 10, 2020 If you are interested in participating in a future Justice Journey to Mexico or Cambodia (or a Virtual Justice Journey), we recommend you join us for an online prayer and discernment time, led by Spiritual Directors Mark and Petra Anderson. Due to the uncertainty of Covid-19, we are re-thinking what Justice Journeys will look like in the near future, and we want you to be part of that conversation! We likely won't be able to travel for a while, but that doesn't mean that Justice Journeys are no longer an important part of what we do. We want to keep our hearts excited about missions, and pray corporately about what that might look like this year. On Saturday, October 10 we will be gathering on Zoom to hear some updates from our partners in Cambodia, and discuss and pray about the future of Justice Journeys and Tenth Global. JUST 58 - ThanksgivingWatch a short film and talk justice in just 58 minutes - Sunday, October 11, 2020 Throughout the summer, Tenth Global has been hosting regular film screenings and times of discussion about justice issues. In a three part series about Cambodia before, during, and after the time of the Khmer Rouge and the Killing Fields, participants had the opportuity to encounter the horrific devastation and violence in the 1970s that still has an current impact in Cambodia. We also had a chance to discuss the incredible bravery and resilience of people in Cambodia today, and hear directly from Makara, Tenth's liason in Cambodia, and other global partners. These JUST 58 events have been so educational and inspiring, so we decided to continue hosting them in the fall! Our first fall JUST 58 will be on October 11 at 7:15pm, and will be focused on the theme of refugees and thanksgiving. A significant aspect of the work of Tenth Global involves working with refugees, and this is such a wonderful opportunity for you to join the conversation. We hope you can make it! Seven Months of TearsStories from Tenth's Refugee Ministry We have the gift of knowing and learning from many brave people. Here is another story of a member in our community, who has generously shared their experience of being a refugee in Vancouver. "Living is not easy in this beautiful city--everybody sees the lights of high towers and buildings but nobody knows how refugees spend their first days in darkness. Many people walk around you, but nobody talks to you. I remember I went to the park and I didn’t find someone to talk to me, to ask me how I am. I am from a big family, so the loneliness came over me and I became depressed. I took medication; spent most of my time in sleep. When I woke up the first question I ever asked was where do I have to go? I didn’t have anyone here, just me and me. I asked many times this question and the answer was the same...." Hard Work on the FarmYoung leaders in Cambodia learn the importance of community. After 8 long hours on an overnight bus and a trip in the back of a truck through rolling hills outside the provincial capital, a group of five young men, along with Brian, Bophal, and Mr. Virak (YESIC Drop-in Center Director at DOVE), arrived at an isolated farm in Cambodia with the task of helping out with a farming project. The group of young men who participated in this trip engaged in difficult, physical work, and discovered the important role that community plays in the development of faith... One Can Give Without LovingBut One Cannot Love Without Giving Exodus 35:4-5 says “Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, ‘This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord’s contribution …’” In this time of great uncertainty for our partners in Cambodia and Mexico, and can offer our generosity to support the work that they are doing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are two ways you can help: 1. Pray - Click here to find specific requests for prayer in this season. Everything that Tenth Global does to support partners in Cambodia and Mexico, missionaries across the globe, and refugees here in Vancouver is supported by these three funds, and they do not receive money from Tenth's General Fund (offering). 100% of your donations to these funds go to local and global ministry, and the work of Tenth Global is made possible by you and your generosity.
