I love Tenth Church, where we can only do what God is calling us to do because of an army of faithful and committed volunteers who connect the reality of God with the opportunities around us.

This week, meet our "extroverted engineer", Tom Chui who serves as an Alpha Leader, Coordinating Assistant of International Missions, and a Connections Team Lead.

Andrew: What do you enjoy most about serving?

Tom: Being an extreme extrovert, I really love to meet and interact with people of different walks of life. With each of the ministries I serve, I’m able to work with tons of amazing people who have taught me so much about servant leadership. I especially love being able to share my passion and laughter with all those I volunteer with. I also really appreciate the opportunity to serve the church where I got married, got baptized and hopefully in several months, dedicate our child in.

Andrew: Where have you seen God work as you serve?

Tom: I have seen God’s hand in training me for each of the ministries where I serve. Through my work as an engineer, I have learnt the skills to problem solve and to work in a team environment. Through my years of being the captain of a dragonboat team, I have learnt how to lead a group of like-minded individuals to a common goal. And through my experience in Cambodia with Tenth last July, I have grown a compassionate heart to serve those who don’t have a voice. I truly believe that the roles that I’m in were chosen by the Holy Spirit and specially designed based on my spiritual gifts. It is so life-giving when you are doing a job that you feel you are called to do.

Andrew: How have you grown through serving?

Tom: I've learned to be more patient with others and myself. There are certain things where through determination and hard work, you could speed up the process—however, I’ve learnt that a truly genuine relationship takes time. Time for the friendship. Time for trust to flourish. It's amazing how many inspiring individuals are in this congregation and I’m so proud to be able to serve alongside each of them.

When our lives are joined to Jesus, we find that we also are enlisted in His mission to share God’s love with those around us.  One of the best ways of discovering your gifts and finding community is by serving.  Could God be inviting you to take that step?  Check out the opportunities to volunteer on our Volunteer Directory.

Not sure where you can help? Let us know about your interest. Or, I’d love to chat with you about finding a place for you to serve.

Don’t just go to church.  Be the church.
