How are we to make sense of all the horrific bloodshed we see in the Scriptures?  There are several occasions in the Old Testament that commands the complete destruction of a neighboring people group.  If God’s heart is for the flourishing of the world, how can he sanction something that looks like genocide?

Matt Lynch is the Associate Professor of Old Testament at Regent College and most of Matt’s past research has centered on violence in the Hebrew Bible.  He wrote Portraying Violence in the Hebrew Bible: A Literary and Cultural Study (Cambridge, 2020) and has a forthcoming book entitled Flood and Fury: Engaging Old Testament Violence (IVP, 2023).

Matt spoke on Wednesday, August 30th and helped us address important questions around violence in the Old Testament.
