At Tenth, we seek to be a community committed to justice both locally and globally. In Canada, it is impossible to pursue justice locally without addressing the dark past of Canada and the church with Indigenous people.

In 2015, Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission released 94 calls to action for Canadians to pursue. Many of these calls to action are related to something called the "Doctrine of Discovery."

Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen lands, Strong Hearts is a film about a devastating decision, made over 500 years ago, that continues to profoundly impact Indigenous and Settler people worldwide.

The goal of our viewing this film together as a community is to first and foremost, listen and learn. Only until we are informed and educated about the truth can we then pursue rightly and wisely, reconciliation.

We invite everyone at Tenth East Van, whether having seen the film previously, to come for an in-person viewing of the Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts. We acknowledge and understand that reconciliation work is hard, complicated, messy, and will take time. However, we do believe that this viewing is an essential first or next step in every follower of Jesus's walk toward justice. Therefore, we will be showing the film on three separate occasions so that everyone may have the chance to participate:

  1. Sunday, November 14th, 11am @ The Polish Hall
  2. Tuesday, November 16th, 6:30pm @ Mount Pleasant
  3. Friday, November 19th, 6:30pm @ Mount Pleasant

Together as a community, we will eat a meal catered by the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society, listen and learn from the film the Doctrine of Discovery, and engage in reflection and gracious discussion on what we have heard.

Registration is $10 to partially cover lunch/dinner which will be catered by the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. The rest will be covered by Tenth. Together, we will enjoy a delicious salmon chowder served with bannock, both authentic Aboriginal food items. We believe that not only learning intellectually about the history, but also experientially the culture are integral steps towards true learning, reconciliation, and justice. If you are unable to eat this due to dietary restrictions, please contact Ryan at ryan@tenth.ca.
